      hdmi_safe=1 is equivalent to:

      hdmi_force_hotplug=1 hdmi_ignore_edid=0xa5000080 config_hdmi_boost=4 hdmi_group=2 hdmi_mode=4 disable_overscan=0 overscan_left=24 overscan_right=24 overscan_top=24 overscan_bottom=24

      You can add

      hdmi_force_hotplug=1 hdmi_ignore_edid=0xa5000080 config_hdmi_boost=4 hdmi_group=2 hdmi_mode=4 disable_overscan=1

      instead of hdmi_safe=1.

      @t3stin I don't know, I use a stock config and this is not set on my system. If you just want to test the sound, there's a command line speaker-test command you can use. Or download an .mp3 and play it from the command line with cvlc.

      @radji Ran into this while I was researching my own struggles outputting dual monitors from my Pi 4. I found a way to get it done - I'll spare you the walkthrough if that's okay but it involved booting the desktop environment first with xrandr installed and the displays configured there - then rigging the thing to autostart emulation station from there on top of that environment. Long story short, I took a huge performance hit, even the gen. 4 consoles started dropping frames and chopping audio. I was super proud to get it working after many failures and posts online saying it couldn't be done, but unfortunately it just wasn't worth it in the end. Most people suggest an HDMI splitter and now that I can see how rough it can be on the system to make this work - just don't do it is my advice. Maybe it's a moot point for you by now, but FYI for anyone else down the road. Go with the splitter.

      @152adam Just tried it in bin/cue format and the soundtrack is working now. So it seems likely the .chd format is the source of the issue with the cd audio. Wonder if anyone else has noticed this problem.

      @mitu Thank you. I sorted it. I changed the TV itself to "external speaker" only and the Pi to hdmi. It seems to work fine now. I get no audio at all when I choose "3.5" or "auto".

      Oh sorry misunderstood. Well, it's a little bit all over the place. Before overclocking, one TV I tried had 720p. It had occasional audio cut outs. Another TV had external speakers and had a resolution of 1920x1080. That one had terrible audio drop outs that lasted the longest. The last one I tried was at 3,840x2,160 and was working better than the other two. The audio dropouts were there but they didn't last as long.

      Since that 720p TV still had audio drop outs, I don't think that could be the solution. But I haven't tried changing the resolution for any of the TVs so I'm not 100% sure.

      Is there any documentation or user experience anywhere as to what the differences/pros/cons of each audio driver and resampler actually are?

      @rc_cola
      Once when I experienced problems with cd tracks on psx games, I experimented with different audio drivers. If you dig more and search the web, you will find some different opinions. I think one of the audio driver will synchronize with video and if you get frame drops or anything else can't keep it up, then audio starts to stutter. Changing the driver did resolve this problem, if i remember right. The audio wasn't no longer synchronized, but it sounded without problems and I couldn't tell anything wrong with it. It was only happening with cd tracks. So, in short, this could be one of the tradeoffs. I have no more details about this, sorry.

      Btw, you may find more information if you search about these topics in generell, like sdl vs alsa. These are common in Linux. And just in case you missed this page:
      https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Sound-Issues/ Note, they speak about older Raspberry Pi versions on this page.
